NODE PARAMETERS
*******************
TheNet nodes operate on a DYNAMIC ROUTING CONCEPT. This means the software is
able to make automatic allowances for node changes within the network.
TheNet recognizes when new nodes are added to the system and deletes old nodes
that have failed. It does this through periodic broadcasts containing routing
and obsolescence information.
TheNet nodes can be also configured to operate in a stand-alone environment.
There is a varying degree of adjustment latitude that can allow the node
to go through the extremes of recognizing only itself, just its neighbors, or
all other available nodes within the system.
The NodeOp in concert with network mangement has the options of setting up the
node to operate "wide open", or to selectively include or exclude specific
nodes or users. It is this flexibility that makes TheNet Plus a popular choice
for networking. One of the tools allowing this is a series of parameters
that establish various node operating conditions. Most node parameters will
seldom require attention following initialization. A few parameters may need
occasional attention. The next five files goes into detail on each of the
parameters. The suggested values given for each parameter will allow proper
node operation in a typical system.
Recent versions of TheNet Plus contain two sets of parameters, those that are
programmed (fixed) into the EPROM, and those that are settable by SYSOP action.
The over-riding factor driving this dual parameter configuration was the lack
of internal EPROM programming space. With each parameter that was fixed,
bytes were saved. The saved space was used for additional node features. In
each case, the candidate parameters selected for "fixed" set-up, were those
rarely, if ever, requiring change once the node was in operation.
